Club Appearances

November and December has been full of appearances for the RRVDC. The Club put on a display-jam tent for the Denison Fall Art Tour the 1st weekend of November with many interested people stopping by to listen and ask questions about the instruments and the club. Several people signed up for the newsletter and some showed interest in the meetings.
The following weekend, four members performed for a very attentive group of residents at the Texoma Healthcare Center in Sherman. Everyone had a great time and we were welcomed back in the future. And that appearance offered us the opportunity to play December 2nd at Jeanne Strey's church in Blueridge.

Club Meetings rescheduled:
Everyone seems to be in agreement and so it is: The RRVDC will meet on the 4th Saturday of the month beginning in February 2008 with Jam on the 4th Saturday of January. Discussion has been brought up a time or two whether everyone would want a three hour meeting/jam instead of two, since so many travel quite a distance to come to the meetings. We'll be discussing this further in January.

Club Scrapbook:
Janet has graciously taken the task of putting together a scrapbook for the club. She will need anything you might have that could be added to the book. Please don't bombard her with every picture you have. Contact her and let her know what you have to see if it's needed and could be used. Try to help by identifying the people in the pictures you have and note the event and date it was taken. The book will be on display at the WCR Festival in October 2008.

Music tab for meetings:
We've been trying now for a couple of years to organize how our music is taught and learned at the club meetings. Here's what we've come up with: We'll be making a decision on what song we want to learn at the next months meeting. We'll then get the tab/sheet music out to everyone at least two weeks prior to the meeting to give everyone a chance to go over it and learn at least some of the melody and timing. Here's a funny story about this though - you're just gonna love this. At December's meeting (by the way - if you missed it you missed out on a great time!) - Anyway, Dana and David played Hangman's Reel. It seemed relatively simple although we didn't have time to learn the song so we all decided to make it January's song. Well folks - talk about a hard piece to find on the internet. I think we're running up against a wall on the first attempt at a new song. David and Annette will be able to teach it, but I can't send the music right now. If anyone has it, please make it available or send a link/web address so we can all practice before the meeting. I'll get it out to everyone as soon as I can. We'll take all suggestions for future month's lessons. It would be nice if you could locate the music before suggesting a song but we'll try to gather what we can. Try to find both HD and MD (and in the key of 'D' to make life really easy!) - and throw in a Christmas tune request or two - something different or even a little challenging like something common with harmony parts.

Club Play Dates:
Is everyone enjoying the play dates the club has been having this past year? Isn't it fun! What a good feeling to share music with others and enjoy playing your dulcimer. Hopefully we can keep finding different events to share our enthusiasm about our instruments and club with others. If you know of any events the club may be interested in setting up at, let us know so we can organize a group to set up a demonstration and/or jam tent.

Helpful Hint
What's your 2008 resolution? Mine is to find another venue to play at this year. Yours might be to learn a new song every other month; that was mine last year and I succeeded.... in learning one every three months at least. You might want to pick up another instrument and be a 'cross-over'. What ever the quest is, do your best, enjoy your instrument(s) and have fun! That's what it's all about folks.

Newsletter Contributions

This is your newsletter folks. If you have an announcement, a cartoon, a handy trick, input on a festival or event you went to, please send things in. Since not everyone does the same things, it's nice to share experiences and news with others so everyone can hear about them too!

If your interested in getting together with other members between meeting dates to play, it’s been expressed by some that they would entertain getting together to practice. Email to rrvdc@texoma.net and we’ll get everyone connected.
