The purpose of our Dulcimer Club is to provide opportunities for dulcimer enthusiasts to meet and share ideas and information, learn new music, and just have a good time jammin'. The club meets the 4th Saturday of each month. A short business meeting is followed by workshops for mountain and hammered dulcimers and a jam session. All stringed instruments are welcome.

Sathish Sathiyanesam is a data control programmer and is 3 years new to the US. He's from India and has studied in England and Norfolk VA. He has a Masters in Public Health Services and is currently working along with Jeanne. He doesn't have a musical background and has yearned to play something like the guitar for as far back as he remembers. Jeanne told him how easy it was to play the mountain dulcimer and he is going to give it a try.

June Meeting
We had eight members and a guest in attendance this meeting. I think we all felt pretty lucky to have this many in the summer months. Usually we dwindle as many people travel and have other summer activities going on. And then there's the fuel cost issue - we won't go there right now.

New Raffle Items Coming In
We've got some surprises for this year's raffle and we're pretty excited about it too! We won't give away the secret; you'll have to come to the festival! With donations big and small our festival continues to be strong and FREE! You get a little of everything - workshops, concerts, jams, picnic atmosphere, and lots of fun. And when you buy raffle tickets, t-shirts, other festival printed items and the dinner tickets you're supporting the performers because all of the proceeds go to defray the festival costs. All the way from the excellent food, to the great performers, and the special place we hold the Winter Creek Reunion Festival - which by the way is the 7th annual this year
If we have any readers who are in the position to donate dulcimer and music related items to the raffle to help support the festival, please contact the club on how items can be delivered or shipped. We thank everyone in advance - way in advance because it is so important to have your generosity and support.

Margaret Wright's Continuing Dulcimer Workshop
This is a great opportunity everyone! This is straight from Margaret herself:
I was wondering if you would advertise my summer workshop in your next publication. Several folks from up there came last year. It will be July 30 - August 2, 2008. I call it "continuing dulcimer." Many levels can be addressed in this way. I am pretty good at diversifying assignments for various skill levels while playing the same tune. I would not think any advanced players should be interested and I am not geared for any absolute beginners during this class. The cost will be $80 and limited lodging is available at our house on a per day fee (meals included.) There is camping at nearby Ratcliff Lake National Forest Recreation Site (4 miles) and hotels in Crockett (16 miles away.)
Thanks a lot. Hope you are doing well.
Love, Margaret

Helpful Hint
DON'T use furniture polish or oils on your dulcimer. For those finger pluckers or strummers out there, you should wash your hands before playing your instrument. For cleaning, a water dampened cloth will not hurt your instrument for stubborn areas. A stiff brush, preferably made of natural bristles, brushes away dust between the strings and frets. Strings can be cleaned with a DRY nylon scrub pad or 0000 steel wool or 600 grit sandpaper. Some players believe the tarnish on the strings adds to the sound and personality of the music and don't believe in cleaning them - Yours to decide.

Newsletter Contributions
Don't forget everyone, you can send in your event news, an article, an interesting web link, a comic or joke, etc. for inclusion in the newsletter. I'm always looking for things to pass on to others. If you enjoyed it, most likely so will everyone else!
If your interested in getting together with other members between meeting dates to play, it’s been expressed by some that they would entertain getting together to practice. Email to rrvdc@texoma.net and we’ll get everyone connected.
