Margaret Wright's Continuing Dulcimer Workshop
This is a great opportunity everyone! This is straight from Margaret herself:

I was wondering if you would advertise my summer workshop in your next publication. Several folks from up there came last year. It will be July 30 - August 2, 2008. I call it "continuing dulcimer." Many levels can be addressed in this way. I am pretty good at diversifying assignments for various skill levels while playing the same tune. I would not think any advanced players should be interested and I am not geared for any absolute beginners during this class. The cost will be $80 and limited lodging is available at our house on a per day fee (meals included.) There is camping at nearby Ratcliff Lake National Forest Recreation Site (4 miles) and hotels in Crockett (16 miles away.)

Thanks a lot. Hope you are doing well.
Love, Margaret

McKinney Farmer's Market
Jeanne Strey, Annette and David Lindsey and a member of the Hogwallow Boys performed at the farmer's market in McKinney on the 17th of May (popular weekend!). They had a good time performing to the market attendees. (Happy Birthday Annette!)

Magnolia Festival
The club performed on the main stage at the Annual Magnolia Festival again this year. We had a good member turn out and had lots of fun as we played to a captivated audience. John Ware was gracious to take a couple of photos and videos as the club was performing. Don't forget you can check out the videos on www.youtube.com/rrvdc. We'll try to capture more video to post on YouTube but right now you'll see what we have to offer our viewers.

Members perform at Old Ft. Parker in Groesbeck Texas
Club members Sarah Cannon, Annette Lewis and Laurel Hamrick traveled to Groesbeck Texas on May 17th to perform for the day at the Pilgrim's Spring Rendezvous at Old Ft. Parker. They had a wonderful day filled with black powder pistol competitions, hatchet throwing, fire making and oh yeah - playing their dulcimers!

Glen Rose
Club members Terry & Sarah Cannon, Laurel Hamrick, Annette Lewis and Marla Loturco attended the festival this year. It was a fun filled time with lots of talent on stage all day and night, workshops and vendors. The weekend also included the dulcimer contests for Texas State. Attendance was low unfortunately - I think we may have to get used to it everyone; fuel costs are going to be a major concern for event attendance.

NARFE (National Active and Retired Federal Employees)
Our own Lois Roberds is the president of the local NARF organization and requested the presence of the club members who could attend to perform at their annual picnic at Waterloo Park on June 5th. Mary Jo Tonelli, Jerry Hogan, Laurel Hamrick and Lois performed after a lunch of burgers and deserts. Besides having to fight the wind (trust me - you had to have been there to understand) the performance was a fun time and everyone really enjoyed the show. (My special thanks to the organization as I won one of the door prizes! Whoop Whoop!)

Workshop with Sandy Conatser of Nashville
Annette Lewis, Marla Loturco and Laurel Hamrick attended the workshop held by the Northeast Texas Dulcimer Chorus in Pittsburgh June 7th. Willie and Hollie from the Denton Dulci-Doodlers were there too! Debbie Porter taught an hour long beginners class and then Ms. Sandy Conatser taught 2 hours of four part harmony on several songs she lined out for the group. A special D4D (Dulcimers for David) presentation was made to a young lady of 10yoa. She has only been playing since January and is already showing remarkable talent. There were 62 people in attendance. Talk about an awesome feeling to walk into a club meeting and see so many people playing and enjoying the meeting and workshop. After the workshop about 45 people met at the local Pizza Inn, ate and then played for about 15 minutes more. Then the RRVDC and the DDD went to Teri Siddens' home town and played at the Frame Up Gallery in Mt. Vernon. It was a great time for all.

Teri Siddens, a member of our club and the Northeast Texas club, is very fortunate to have so many people actively participating in club membership and activities. The club also has several pre-teen and teen members; absolutely fantastic! The club meets the first Saturday of every month with a beginners' class and group jams from 9a - 12p at the Pilgrims Community Room. You may contact Janice at jjjmarsh@countrynet.net for further information about the club.

-As Janice receives this newsletter - Thank you Janice for a wonderful workshop. We enjoyed our time and hope to travel to Pittsburgh again soon. We'll try to bring more members with us next time!

Summer Meetings
I've had several people ask whether we're meeting during the summer. YES. Even though the numbers do dwindle a little during the summer, the rest of us that stick around still want to play and get together. It used to be a "meeting place" issue, but since the First Baptist Church of Cartwright has opened their doors to our members to have the meetings, we have a comfortable place to still meet during the summer months. So, Yes - 4th Saturdays from 11:30a - 2:30p. If anyone has a meeting program idea, just email and we'll see what we can do - we're all up for new ideas!

DPNonline
Dulcimer Player's News now has an on-line weekly video cast on www.YouTube.com/DPNonline. If you haven't visited YouTube yet you're missing out on a lot of great stuff out there. Plus that tells me you haven't seen the club's videos yet! Shame on you! Go to www.youtube.com/rrvdc. Great stuff I'm telling you!

Helpful Hint
If you haven't invested in a small digital or micro cassette recorder - please - do yourself a favor and get one! Trying to remember how a tune went after you've left the meeting or workshop just ain't going to get it unless you read music! While many of us can read music, those of us who only or also play by ear can pick up a tune quickly if we were able to hear it repeatedly as we worked out the chording and melody. Months after hearing the song for the first time, you can hear it again and keep the tune fresh in your mind to help you 'feel' your way through it. A great little investment for your music education.
